It turns out, though, that this isn't the fault of the auto-updater itself, but by a bad configuration on Rockstar's part, which causes the auto-updater to use 10 simultaneous connections to the same server! This kills your download speed and causes exactly the sort of problems I was seeing.įortunately, it's fairly easy to work around. Disabling the Web Shield component in my antivirus (Avast) helped a little, but not much. I couldn't even leave it going overnight because the auto-updater would frequently say that the service was unavailable and force me to click "Retry" to continue. The download speed I got on the auto-updater was horrible, and it would frequently drop out. I bought GTA 5 the other day outside of Steam.
